9.22.16 Response # 5 Pipel

In what ways was the hanging of the young Pipel the ultimate challenge to young Elie's spiritual faith? How does the symbolism of "night" compare to the symbolism of the young Pipel?

  1. The hanging of the young Pipel was the ultimate challenge to young Elie's spiritual faith because when a man asked "...where is God" Elie internally answered him saying " Where is he? This is where- hanging here from this gallows..." This shows that for Elie when they killed that young Pipel they killed his God as well. They said that the boy had the face of an angel in distress. It had pained everyone when that little boy was killed even the ones that were killing him.He was beloved by everyone and it hurt them when he was hanged. A lot had to do with the fact that he did not die instantly like the other men. Because he was smaller he hung there for over half an hour in between life and death. The symbolism of night compared to the symbolism of the young pipel are completely opposite. The young pipel was seen as an angel who brought light. Everyone cared for him. The young boy was their light and when he was killed they were right back in darkness. In the beginning it had gotten to the point where they were used to the men being hanged but this little boy caused emotions to be brought out of everyone. It was just like killing a God. They know that once he's gone it wont be the same any more. Even Elie said "That night, the soup tasted of corpses." It wasn't the same and it wasn't right, and they all knew it. When the young Pipel died it had everyone questioning God again.

  2. Ways in which the hanging of the young Pipel was the ultimate challenge to Elie’s spiritual faith were that he felt as if his God was dead, and God had abandoned him. The symbolism of “night” compares to the symbolism of the young Pipel by Elie Wiesel’s spiritual faith dying, and fading away. In the beginning of the chapter, Elie said noone had ever cried during a hanging. They had forgotten how to cry because they’re hearts were hardened. This shows us that young Pipel being hanged really affected them deeply. As the rest of us, we were weeping (Wiesel 64). The appearance of young Pipel was different. This one had a delicate and beautiful face - an incredible sight in this camp (Weisel 63). He looked like an angel to Elie Wiesel. It was torture for anyone to watch that happen. Even the SS officers were hesitant to carry out the orders. I could sense a feeling of worry and fear. The Lagerkapo was even nervous to do his own job. This event really set an increase on German brutality towards the Jews. The child died a more slow and painful death than anyone else who was ever been hanged. He really struggled, but in the end he lost, and his life had to be taken away. But the third rope was still moving: the child, too light, was still breathing… And so he remained for more than half a hour, lingering between life and death, writhing before our eyes. And we were forced to look at him at close range. He was still alive when I passed him. His tongue was still red, his eyes not yet extinguished (Wiesel 65). They doubted God’s presence. Behind me, I heard the same man asking: “For God’s sake, where is God?” And from within me, I heard a voice answer: “Where He is? This is where - hanging her from this gallows…” That night, the soup tasted of corpses (Wiesel 65). This quote really marks down or indicates the death of Elie Wiesel’s faith, and how he felt that God was absent. It was shown in the beginning of the book how deep and dedicated he was in faith, and how he even wanted to know more than he already knew. The Germans had impacted his once strong and firm faith to a nothingness with their violent acts. Even though his faith is portrayed like this to the reader, he still acknowledges that God is, or was, present with him, and that God was concisely right there at this moment. His belief in God has ceased altogether at this particular point. Another thing I want to point out that goes hand in hand with Elie Wiesel’s faith when he started out in the camp is silence. He claimed that the child was calm and quiet. But the boy was silent (Wiesel 64). This symbolizes or somehow connects ro the fact that the Jews thought God was silent and let things happen. It was another thing that led to disbelief in their faith. “Night” definitely gives of a gloomy and sorrowful feel, and this event did the same to all Jews who were forced to witness it. Thus, the Jews decided that their faith was a lie, God ceased to exist. He was absent in the worst of times.

  3. The hanging of the young Pipel was the ultimate challenge to young Elie's spiritual faith by see if he still believe in god. An example from the book is "For God's sake, where is God? And from within me, i heard a voice answer: Where he is? This is where- hanging here from this gallows...".
This shows that they need god and if god was the boy hanging there on the gallow he was going to die. Elie thought if that was god then and he was not going to die, then Elie was not going to believe in god any more.
Young Pipel symbolizes happiness. He brought happiness to everyone. Sense he brought happiness to everyone, when he was to be hung, the Lageralteste refused to be apart of the execution of the boy. The hanging of the boy brought sad to everyone, an example is "That night, the soup tasted of corpses". This shows that it made Elie sad about his death because it had a negative connotation behind it. And after the boy as hung Lageralteste's voice quivered.
So in conclusion the hanging of young pipel gave Elie ultimate challenge for his faith by seeing if he still had any belief in him, and young pipel symbolized different things than Elie by bringing sadness to Elie and other in the camps.

  4. I think the hanging of the young boy Pipel affects Elie the most. As Elie witnesses the hanging of the young Pipel, he feels that it is his God who is hanging on the gallows. The death of the pipel is related to the death of Elie's faith in his God. He feels as if though if he could allow such things like the hanging of an innocent child to go on he must be dead or he must not be present. Night symbolizes a dark time period and young pipel symbolizes a young innocent little boy, he also symbolized the faith that Elie Wisel had in God, which is now gone.

  5. The hanging of young Pipel was a huge ultimate challenge for Elie's spiritual faith. Elie has watched a bunch of hangings but this one was crucial to him. They describe Pipel as "This one had a delicate and beautiful face - an incredible sight iin this camp." Page63. Pipel to Elie was his god, and once he got hung Elie felt different. "Behind me, I heard the same man asking: "For God's sake, where is God?" And from within me, I heard a voice answer: "Where He is? This is where - hanging here from this gallows...". Page 65. It challenges his faith now because he has no god. Him being Judiasm and having a strong belief in god, its all gone now. The symbolism of "night" compares to young Pipel because that was a dark time. Young Pipel was the light, or hope for Elie and now he doesn't have that. That was a time that Elie will not forget and it was a hard time for him.

  6. The hanging of the young Pipel was the ultimate challenge to young Elie’s spiritual faith. Elie has seen so many people getting hanged and never cried because since they stayed at the concentration camps for a very long time, they being to gradually lose their sense of emotions.
But when the young Pipel, who had the face of a sad angel was sentenced to be hanged, it negatively affects everyone that was in the concentration camp. Everyone including the SS guards and the prisoner who usually served as the executioner felt sympathy and sorrow towards the young Pipel. They knew that hanging a young child was extremely cruel and evil.
Elie felt like the Nazis had killed his God, or his God has abandoned them and it was slowly destroying his faith in God.
I think the symbolism of night is dark, the absence of light or Elie’s God and the painful period the Jews had to endure throughout the Holocaust. I believe that the young Pipel symbolize purity and faith because he is an innocent young, little boy.

  7. The hanging of the young Pipel had an utimate challenge to young elies spiritual faith. Since the young boy was about in elies age group he cared and worried because they couldve been him. The young Pipel resembled an angel . He was pictured as having a delicate and beautiful face which made the camp see a incredible light .
So when young Pipel was getting hung, it made the camp change from seeing light to going back dark . They hung the young Pipel even though their feelings were not connecting with the incident . Since their so used to hanging any and everybody , they had no choice and had to ignore their real feelings.
They looked up as the young Pipel being a God . Which resembled the good . So when they did hang him , that took the faith of Elie because his God is now taken away from him .
The symbolism of Night is very different from the symbolism of Elies God . This is because the symbolism of night has a dark kind of symbolism and then you have the God with a positive , faith , light kind of symbolism.
