  1. The connotation of night helps develops the symbolism of the absence of god in a way. Nighttime means like sleep, or dark but in the book the night was the end of day one. In the book Elie and his father are picked in one group, which is supposedly the group that is to be killed. “Only four more steps. Three. There it was now, very close to us, the pit and its flames.” In this time Elie believed his life was to be over, and he starts to whisper. “Deep down, I was saying good-bye to my father, to the whole universe, and, against my will, I found myself whispering the words: “Yisgadal, Veyiskadash, Shmey Raba, . . . May his name be exalted and sanctified . . .” My heart was about to burst. There. I was face-to-face with the Angel of Death.” Night helps develop it because they are already scared, because they don’t know what is next. When he believes to be next in line for the crematoria he says that. It progresses because the tone was already one way and kept it on track with his words.

  2. The connotation of night is usually bad and means that something bad is about to occur. Night can also mean gloomy, sad, or depressing.
In the memoir Elie refers to night only when something bad is happening or about to. Before Elie’s father was told that” the ghetto was to be liquidated entirely”, he stated that “night fell”, that could also be taken literal meaning that it was night time but it can also symbolize that something bad was about to occur in which it did.
When Elie referred to “silence” he was referring to the absence of God. Elie started to question such a god that he believed in because how could be “silent” through all of this. How could he let such a thing happen to such innocent people.

  3. The connotation of the word night is not usually a "happy" tyoe of word. The connotation of the word night usually means dark, depressing, and sad. The connotation of night helps develops the symbolism of the absence of God in every way. It helps the reader think that night may mean that its dark because the jews or God himself has left and has stopped believing in each other. When Elie and the others were sent to Aushwitz, he was filled with anger seeing the faces of children and kids being turned into ash. He was thinking how God could let this happen, Has he abandoned us? Elie used the word silence to describe what God was. He was silent and did nothing to protect his people (elie thought).

  4. The connotation of night is most likely to be negative. Also like hopeless, depressing, and sad.
Elie refers to night in his memoir as a depressing time. An example is "Never shall I forget that night, the first night in the camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed". This shows that he thought that depressing time too by how he said it changed his life, it seemed to he to be a long rough nightand he could not believe that god let what he saw happen that night.
In conclusion Elie would never forget what he saw that night and would consider it to be a depressing time in his life. Also that he could not believe what he saw and that god let it happen.

  5. The connotation of night is a situation you wouldn't want to be in or put in . It creates a bad and depressing mood . It makes you have a negative mind and unhappy thoughts .
Elise referred to night as an time he didn't want to imagine again or be put through which was a depressing and sad mood . When Elie was holding his dad tight and after his mom and sister were separated from them , I say this refers to night . The literal meaning of this could have been that after this or during this something bad was going to happen which did and Or the situation needed to come to an end . The symbolism of the abstence of god should be present because they were in a bad or critical situation where they wanted to be helped . During the situation , Elie and others needed a lot of help but nobody was there to help . So because of how harsh and depressing this was for him , how could he ever forget . It was basically a big impact on his life and how he survived . It symbolizes night also because he kind of already knew what was going to happen but nobody tried to stop the problems when he tried to speak up about it .

  6. The connotation of night helps develop the symbolism of night by giving and understanding to the word night and how it has affected Elie's faith.
When Elie first entered Auschwitz, his family was separated and he was evaluated as healthy or not. Elie was sent to the unhealthy side with his father where they walked towards the crematories to be burned. Elie saw in the flames children and just when they were about to be next they were sent to the barracks. Elie didn't sleep that night, he just lay there questioning how people could do this.
Since the word night is normally viewed as something gloomy and dark, it makes sense why night is a symbol for the night when Elie began to lose faith in his religion.

    1. The connotation of night (nighttime) helps to develop the symbolism of night (the absence of God) by night being a time to be scared because you did not know the future of what was coming. It was a dark and gloomy time for the Jews. They believed God could not hear their cries, and they imagined the worst of the horrible events yet to come. Night was a time where the Jews even whispered when there was no guard present. This represents the amount of fear that settled in them. From what they had seen, known and heard about the crematorium, trepidation had descended upon them, like a thief in the night. At this point, they must have been thinking about whether they were going to be burnt or their family was going to be burned. Night has a very dark connotation that Elie Wiesel even thought he was dreaming or hallucinating was not real. What he had just seen, smelled, felt and heard was not true. They couldn’t be burning humans, just like the Germans, they are humans too. It was unimaginable, unbelievable, inconceivable, incomprehensible and unthinkable. This also represents the darkness that night represents, again. This was a time where Elie Wiesel really catechized God; why God didn’t interfere with such violence and evilness, why God remained silent, why God didn’t save his people and why God allowed those things to happen to the Jews. He is simply asking God where he was in the midst of all this events happening. Night could also mean death, and loss of faith. I explained his loss of faith, but in terms of death, night means the death of his innocence, his childhood and millions of people, and it happened right in front of his eyes. The worst things happened in night so far: Mrs Scatcher’s screaming about fire, and them arriving to smell the burning of human flesh. We stared at the flames in darkness (Wiesel 28). Night is about hopelessness. I feel like this portion of the story really summarizes everything night symbolizes. NEVER SHALL I FORGET that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith for ever. Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes. Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never (Wiesel 34)). This shows how horrible and dark night was that he could never erased what happened from his memory. The severity of the situation is also revealed in all that portion of the story. He talks about all the things I addressed in this explanation.

  7. The connotation of night can help symbolize the absence of God, because from a religious view point without God people would be lost, and in darkness. But with God people can see and are in light. When Elie went to the camp he felt as if he had lost his God so he was then lost and unable to see. He had no one to guide him and answer all of his questions. It was as if he was alone and completely consumed by darkness, and negativity with no way out. Night can also be seen as the end because it is the end of the day. So night for Elie could be symbolized as the end of everything he knew to be. His whole life was taken from him and there was no way out of that darkness. Also with the absence of God there is no hope, and with no hope there is no will to continue. In the book "Night" Elie says " Never shall i forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live." Elie had lost his God and lost his hope. It was as if he was just a shell of him former self. He no longer wanted to live, and this was just the first night.
