answer the next question. How was Elie
able to effectively explain what happened to him using this device? Why is figurative language so helpful in
explaining different situations?
Elie was able to effectively explain what happened to him by using hyperboles because he was trying to get a point across and wanted it to appear realistically. For an example in the book it says “That night, the soup tasted of corpses”. This shows that he is exaggerating that the soup tastes like corpse, but it really could not have. All he could think about that night was the death of the young boy while eating.
ReplyDeleteAnother example from the book is “I wanted to run away, but my feet were nailed to the floor.” This shows he was in shock and could not move, not that his feet were literally nailed to the floor. In conclusion, Elie used hyperboles to effectively explain what happened to him.
I agree with your explanation. Hyperbole is an exaggeration that is actually not meant to be taken literally. Stressing a specific point to create a larger-than-life effect, it emphasizes an emotion. Your examples demonstrate your understanding of hyperboles. Overall, our explanation was good, but you have to answer and explain the second question too.
DeleteFigurative language is so helpful in explaining different situations because it helps create a better understanding of the situation and can describe or demonstrate it also.
DeleteElie was able to effectively explain what happened to him using personification by humanizing inanimate or nonhuman objects to perform human actions. It allowed him to explain and give vivid examples to the reader of what he was experiencing or how he felt at a particular time. An example is "But it was all in vain. Our terror could no longer be contained. Our nerves reached a breaking point. Our very skin was aching. It was as though madness had infected us all" (Wiesel 25-26). This quote is an example of personification because madness is being described to have living traits its ability to infect people, such as a virus. Another example is “My father’s voice tore me from my daydreams..." (Wiesel 32). This is an example of personification because a voice cannot physically tear a person from their daydreams, but can only wake one up. Figurative language is so helpful in explaining different situations because it portrays people's emotions more acutely, and helps the reader find out more about the person. They expand meaning and increase the creativity of the writing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement on how personification allowed Elie to give vivid examples. I also love the example from the book that you gave. It shows their pain. And is a real account to how they felt. Your explanation to how this is personification was great as well.
DeleteUsing personification allowed Elie to give a deeper meaning to everything. He said on page 34 that he would never forget the flames that consumed his faith, the silence that deprived him of the desire to live, and the moments that murdered his God. None of these things have the actual ability to take away these qualities of him, but he described them as such to enhance and deepen his meanings. Even though these things didn't literally happen. This was how these inanimate objects made him feel. It explained the negativity that was brought from these things. Elie wanted to use this figurative language to show the reader that when this happened it caused a chain reaction of a loss of myself. Even though these things are unable to actually do these actions.
ReplyDeletei agree with your explanation, and i like your example of Elie faith was consumed by the flames. it show how Elie started to lose his faith slowly. i didn't catch that personification till after reading you blog.
DeleteA hyperbole involves an exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis. Elie was able to effectively explain what happened to him using hyperboles because it emphases the important things. For example when he stated, “We were masters of nature, masters of the world. We had forgotten everything—death, fatigue, our natural needs. Stronger than cold or hunger, stronger than the shots and the desire to die, condemned and wandering, mere numbers, we were the only men on earth”, this was an example of a hyperbole. This statement helped him effectively describes the death march because it explained how powerful he felt and how he overcame the trials and tribulations that he went through
ReplyDeleteI agree with your explanation. Elie was trying to emphasize the important things that happen to him during the Holocaust. And also to describe what it was like then. It is a good explanation.
DeleteElie used personification to make the reader look at things from a deeper meaning. Looking at personification in Night, I can see Ellie's point of view of things and how he interpreted them. On page 92 Elie makes death a living thing by capitalizing the d in it. He says "Death wrapped itself around me till I was stifled." This shows us how Elie could almost feel death because he was so close to giving up and dying. He used personification in this moment to show us how death felt so real and that it was everywhere around him almost consuming him. Figurative language can help add a different and deeper meaning to certain sitatuions. It can also mean the author wants you to really remember and make that part stand out because it's something important.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the explanation . I do agree on it helps form a deeper meaning because when he said " Death wrapped itself around..." which had a deep meaning to it .I say that it was because he felt he was close to death. Death had became something many wanted because they could not hang on anymore .So , i agree with this all .
DeleteElie was able to effectively explain what happen to him by using personifications. By using personifications, readers can create a mental picture of what he is trying to tell us so we could get a clearer understanding of what he was going through in this life. It also helps the readers to understand Elie's thoughts or feelings. An example of personification that Elie provided in the book is "My throat was dry and the words were choking me, paralyzing my lips. There was nothing else to say.” The personification is "words were choking me" because words do not have the strength to physically choke someone. This quote described how the words were hurting him and how he kept silence about it.
ReplyDeleteI agree that personification does create a mental picture besides the literal point. I also agree that it allows the readers to understand Elie's thoughts and feelings. I feel like that is a big part in the book Night, Elie wanted the readers to really understand what he went through. The quotes go along with the explanation, good explaining.
DeleteElie expressed his time in the concentration camp through a motif, which symbolizes death. Elie comes across three types deaths through the time, which are Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual. For example, When Pipel died that was all the types of deaths. This was Physical because Pipel literally got hung, but also Spiritual because that is when Elie lost all his faith. It was Emotional to Elie because once he lost his faith he did not know what else he had to live for. Figurative language is very useful because it creates a deeper meaning behind something. Pipel wasn't just someone getting hung to Elie it was a huge deal. That was because Pipel created a motif and had a meaning behind him.
ReplyDeleteElie was effective using hyperbole because he exaggerated thing to show how real the situation was. for an example, "we were master of nature ,master of the world" means he was in control of his own life." we were the only men on earth" means that the men are important. this take us deeper into what Elie was saying ,and how his emotion also play a role in the story.
ReplyDeleteI agree that hyperbole is an exaggeration of words. i also agree that Elie uses hyperbole to give the reader a better understanding of what Elie is feels like s happening to him, and expresses his emotions better.
DeleteElie was effective using hyperbole .The literary device helps Elie describe the in depth what he went through . It helps better understand by exaggerating the statement . For example , "masters of the world " really means that they had a main part in life . " Only men on earth" doesnt refer to literally the only men on earth , it refers to that they were center of attention and important , also the main point . It strengths his words and feelings . Using hyperbole , makes the reader think more into the statement and relate .
ReplyDeleteWhat you said about Elie using hyperbole to make the reader think more into the statement and relate is true. He does make the reader want to relate and put themselves in his shoes.
DeleteElie Wiesel was effective on using personification in his book "Night." Personification help give a deeper meaning of words/symbols in the text. Personification helps to do two things: create an image of whats happening and to get a better understanding/deeper meaning of what is happening. For example, Elie kept referring to death as "a person" or something "visible". But what Elie was trying to say is that Jews all around him starting to "sleep"(die) one by one, "Around me everything was dancing a dance of death. It made my head reel." And soon Elie felt like he no longer had the strength to live, and he started to "feel death wrapping itsel around him." What elie means is that he wasnt scared anymore of accepting his death.
ReplyDeleteI found your response informing because Elie used personification a lot throughout the book but i never took the time out to think about the deeper meaning behind it. Elie gave death human characteristics all throughout the book, and it really helped us visualize what he actually meant and not just what he was saying.
